User Experience Testing - How To Discuss
Samuel Coleman
User Experience Testing
User experience testing is the process of ensuring the best possible user experience for a website by checking the website for errors (often with a large group of everyday website users).
7 things to know about user experience testing
- You probably know exactly how your site works, but do your users know that too? What seems intuitive to you may not make sense to others. Always check your assumptions.
- According to a study by the Nielson Norman Group, the ideal UX test setup consists of 3 test groups of 5 people each. Statistically, 15 people *all* should discover your usability issues.
- Choosing the right people for your test group is an integral part of UX testing. Friends, family, and co-workers are too nice (or nice) to be good judges.
- Simplified UX testing involves bringing together a test group and asking them to perform tasks under supervision. This type of dough is usually higher quality, but can be expensive.
- In unmoderated UX testing, a test team is assembled to perform tasks remotely and then collect the results. This type of test is cheaper but less verifiable.
- Surveys, heatmaps, recording user sessions, and even giving 5 seconds to answer a simple question on a website (where's the menu?) are core elements of UX testing.
- The best way to find out if your site is working the way you want it to is to have people test it.
