Definition of Spread spectrum:

1. The transmission of a signal over a wider bandwidth than is necessary, typically by varying its frequency or phase transition; frequently attributive.

2. Wireless communication technology (such as CDMA or TDMA) that receives and transmits carrier signals over a wide band (spectrum) of frequencies (channels). Spread spectrum methods require greater bandwidth than the minimum needed for signal transfer. Also called frequency hopping.
