The email says: Thank you for joining our company. We've saved your app and we can get started. The next step is to check the background. To expedite this process, please send an email to our e-mail address (e-mail address) with your CPF number and date of birth. We look forward to adding you to our team. We will notify you when the background check is returned. Thank you very much.

I replied via email that I was not comfortable emailing my social security number and asked if there was another option. Does this sound like a scam?

Yes, definitely an identity theft scandal.

Real employers need your SSN to legally pay you, but they won't need it unless you sign your government employment contract. And they will definitely not make a big deal out of email.

Mom gives you a blueprint that they present, theory is a big deal. I imagine someone has a better chance of winning the legal lottery than relying on what they have to understand.
