Impression RPM - How To Discuss

Writer Daniel Johnston

Impression RPM

Print speed setting

RPM stands for sales per thousand (M is the Roman numeral for thousand). RPM and RPM for a page are different because usually the word 'impression' is used, which are ad impressions. Therefore, CPM revenue measures revenue per thousand page views and CPM revenue measures revenue per thousand ad impressions.

The above formula shows that the yield is estimated. In fact, this indicator is usually estimated. Similar to effective CPM, many different types of campaigns are combined to estimate total revenue, and this amount is then split across completed impressions.

The print speed is often displayed in real time, so you need to estimate the amount as well. This could be, for example, conversion dates that may not be confirmed as quickly.

Technical information

RPM and CPM are different metrics because RPM stands for Revenue and CPM stands for Cost. They look the same but due to cost etc they are not. Revenue is the amount paid to publishers while expenses is the amount paid to advertisers.

Even if an advertiser has tracked all impressions on a website according to the CPM match, the CPM and RPM still may not match.

Example

Johnny's Fruit Juice spends a lot on advertising and buys all the space it can find on fruit juice websites. You pay £5 per thousand impressions on all the sites you work with and work through an agency. The agency uses a third-party ad server to serve ads.

The agency charges 20% of ad spend, bringing the CPM down to £4. An external ad server charges a (high) CPM of 10 cents. That leaves £3.90 CPM.

Fruit Juice World is one of the sites where the agency advertises Johnny's Fruit Juice. They partner with an ad network from which they receive 50% of the revenue.

This means that Fruit Juice World actually only receives half of the CPM from campaigns booked with them. This gives them a print speed of 1.45 lbs.
