IBM and Microsoft worked as a development team to develop the first version of OS / 2. Version 1.0 of OS / 2 was released on December 1987. Microsoft announced a deal with IBM in 1990, shortly after the release of Windows 3.0 into the DOS system.

Due to Microsoft's involvement in both projects, Windows 3.0 OS / 2 shares source code with version 1.3. Most Windows source code was rewritten for Windows 95/98 / May and rewritten for the Windows NT family of operating systems (Windows 2000 / XP / Vista / 7/8). However, a small portion of the Windows source code still seems to be part of the OS / 2 source code. The latest version of OS / 2 was version 4.52, released in December 2001. OS / 2 is currently being developed as an eComStation.
