Folksonomies (Social Tagging) - How To Discuss

Writer Grace Evans

Folksonomies (Social Tagging)

Folksonomies, also known as social tags, are customizable collections of metadata. Users do not intentionally create folksonomy and there is rarely a specific purpose, but folksonomy develops when many users create or store content on particular websites and determine what they think the content is about. Tag clouds allow you to identify various identifiers and the frequency of use of the Folksonomy website. This kind of basic community classification (similar to other social media approaches like blogs and wikis) is prone to vandalism and manipulation, but it's a good example of collective intelligence. Do not confuse folksonomy with taxonomy. Folksonomies structure content with custom tag taxonomies: these are classifications defined by more formal methods that don't necessarily include custom tags and are rarely considered comparable.
