Broad Match Modifier - How To Discuss

Writer Jessica Cortez

Broad Match Modifier

The broad match modifier is used in Google Ads to increase your control over keywords. This allows you to find more specific keywords and reach a more targeted audience. The implementation can improve the accuracy of creative ads and thus improve metrics such as CTR or CR.

Broad match modifier in practice

All you need to do is put a plus sign on your keywords before the chosen words are important to you. Your ads will then appear on searches containing the selected words (with a + sign), including typos, inflections, abbreviations and acronyms.

Example of broad match modifier

Let's say you want to promote your 2021 calendars. In this case, you can register keywords with a broad match modifier of the form: +calendar for +2021. Your ad will then be shown to users who entered this keyword, but will also appear for keywords such as: 2021 calendar, 2021 funny wall calendar, or where there are 2021 calendars. Your ad will not be shown to users with such questions: 2021 planner or a calendar with an envelope.

The broad match modifier is a keyword match type that Google will no longer use on February 18, 2021. Phrase search has now been expanded to cover more search terms.

This is how the broad match modifier works:

When targeting keywords in Google Ads for paid search, modified broad match meant entering keywords with a plus sign (e.g. free + soap).

The same rules apply as for broad match keywords, with the addition of the following before the word preceded by a + sign:

  • spelling mistake
  • cuts
  • synonyms
  • singular or plural options

For example keyword:

+ free soap

You can target searches including:

  • free soap
  • free soap
  • free hand washing
